Young plants suddenly wilt, die and drop over. 2. Hot water treatment (122 degrees F for 25 minutes). Soil applications of metalaxyl (Ridomil 2E 4-8 pt./A) will provide control of Phytophthora crown rot. Note: Do not use Ridomil 2E for disease control in greenhouses. Leaf spots (several fungi) 1. Various types and sizes of leaf spots. 2. NO COPPER FUNGICIDES SHOULD BE USED. Maneb 80 (consult label for specific leaf spot), Maneb + Zinc F4 (consult label for specific leaf spot). Phomopsis blight (fungus) Phomopsis vexans 1. Seedlings may rot at ground surface; cankers or dry-rot on stems of older plants. Circular, gray to brown areas on leaves. Fruit spots, light brown circular & slightly depressed, later dark brown and up to two to three inches. Black fruiting bodies in spots. 2. Rotate crops. Use a fungicide program as for leaf spots. Verticillium wilt (fungus) Verticillium spp. 1. Stunted plants. Wilting during last part of day. Lower leaves turn yellow first, then brown. Vascular tissues dark brown. 2. Move garden site. When identified, rotate crops that excludes tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, okra, raspberries. Commercial producers may wish to consider soil fumigation with Vapam (follow manufacturer's instructions) or soil solarization.
