Yellowing of foliage, twisting and cracking of stalks. 2. See Aster yellows under carrot. Fusarium yellows or wilt (fungus) Fusarium oxysporum 1. Plants turn yellow and are stunted. Stalks may be brittle and taste bitter. 2. Grow wilt-resistant varieties, such as green or Utah pascal strains. Use disease-free transplants. Use a four- to five-year crop rotation. Early blight (fungus) Cercospora apii 1. Small, yellow spots at first. Spots enlarge to ash-gray, irregular and velvety dead areas on leaves and petioles. Entire leaves may die. Outer leaves affected first. No black specks in spots, as with Septoria. 2. Treat seed with thiram prior to planting. Use new soil for seed bed. Make applications of foliar fungicides at 7-10 day intervals, beginning when symptoms first appear. Use benomyl (Benlate 50 WP 4-8 oz./A), chlorothalonil (Bravo 500 1 1/2-2 1/8 pt./A, 720 1-1 1/2 pt./A, or 90 DG 7/8-1 1/4 lb./A), fixed copper or thiophanate-methyl (Topsin M 10 oz./A), Tilt 4 oz./A. Do not apply fungicide within 7 days of harvest. Late blight (fungus) Septoria apiicola 1. Round, yellowish spots at first. Later, they turn tan to yellowish gray. Dead, brown spots on leaves and petioles containing black dots. Entire leaves may die. Usually, affects outer leaves first. 2. See Early blight.
